Get your dog bikini-ready

Extra corona weight is not only a phenomenon among humans, many of our dogs have also gained a few pounds in recent years. After all, those who work from home can also treat the dog to a treat (or two) more often. As a result, the professional association for veterinarians sees more and more obese dogs. Here are a few tips to get your dog back into shape.

Good weight or not?

It can sometimes be quite complicated to find out whether a dog is overweight or not. Often the dog is at a good weight if you can feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat. Are the ribs harder to feel? Do you feel a thick layer of fat? Then you need to take action, because an overweight dog has a greater risk of diabetes, heart disease, skin problems, breathing difficulties and arthritis. A dog that is overweight often gets tired faster during walks, doesn’t keep up games as long, gets easily overheated during hot weather and keeps begging for more food.

Eat less

In essence, it is very simple: those who want to lose weight should exercise more and eat less. On each bag of dog food it says how much of this particular food the dog can eat each day. Stick to that and ignore the dog’s questioning eyes. This also means: no more snacks – although vegetables are allowed of course. Please note that castrated dogs need up to one third less food. Of course, there are special diet foods that ensure that the dog gets all the important vitamins and minerals and quiets the appetite. There are also products on the market that help promote weight loss, but these types of waste diets do cause the volume of stool to increase. This means that dogs also need to go outside more often.

Exercise more

More exercise is essential for an overweight dog. A food ball will get even the laziest dog up and running. Also, most dogs are definitely up for a game like frisbee or fetch. Alternate the usual walk with a bit of cycling or an extra walk around the block. Just make sure you have some sturdy gear to counterbalance overly lazy dogs. With the new Comfort Walk Go by DOG Copenhagen, for example, the dog can keep trying to sit still or pull in the direction of home, because this lightweight 3D harness prevents the dog from coughing or gagging. Is the dog much too heavy? In that case, swimming is much better and safer than walking. This way, the joints are relieved. Afterwards you can quickly dry your dog with the Doggy Dry from EQDOG.

Bikini-ready together
